The Real Cost of Cheap Food $38.94 This challenging but accessible book critically examines the dominant food regime on its own terms, by seriously asking whether we can afford cheap food and exploring what exactly cheap food affords us. Detailing the numerous ways that food has become reduced to a state, such as a price per ounce, combination of nutrients, yield per acre, or calories, the book argues for a more contextual understanding of food when debating its affordability. The author makes a compelling case for why today’s global food system produces just the opposite of what it promises. The food produced under this regime is in fact exceedingly expensive. Thus meat production and consumption are inefficient uses of resources and contribute to climate change; the use of pesticides in industrial-scale agriculture may produce cheap food, but there are hidden costs to environmental protection, human health and biodiversity conservation. Many of these costs will be paid for by future generations cheap food today may mean expensive food tomorrow. By systematically assessing these costs the book delves into issues related, but not limited, to international development, national security, health care, industrial meat production, organic farming, corporate responsibility, government subsidies, food aid and global commodity markets. The book concludes by suggesting ways forward, going beyond the usual solutions such as farmers markets, community supported agriculture, and community gardens. Exploding the myth of cheap food requires we have at our disposal a host of practices and policies. Some of those proposed and explored include microloans, subsidies for consumers, vertical agriculture, and the democratization of subsidies for producers. |

100 Girls on Cheap Paper $22.39 A joyful celebration of lush femininity and quick-witted girlishness, this gorgeous little art book is truly a treasure in itself. German artist Tina Berning’s international reputation is on the rise, winning her raves in the blog world, and it’s easy to see why-her paintings and drawings of women, gathered together here for the first time, are as expressive as they are beautiful. Flitting with ease from nudes to fashion pin-ups, from quick sketches to sultry portraits, Berning’s work is by turns playful, provocative, and just plain pretty, and it’s ripe to be embraced by fans of contemporary illustration. Nestled between distinctive craft-paper covers, 100 Girls on Cheap Paper is an alluring volume for anyone who loves fine art, fashion, or girls. |

The International $12.19 Acclaimed Belfast novelist Glenn Patterson’s classic novel of a day in the life in that city: a funny brilliantly observed bittersweet snapshot of a moment in 1967 just before everything changed. "If I had known history was to be written that Sunday in the International Hotel I might have made an effort to get out of bed before teatime." So begins The International . Danny Hamilton takes us back over three troubled decades to one wonderfully ordinary Saturday in January 1967 when his 18-year-old self had no idea – most people had no idea – that ordinary days in Belfast would soon become tragically rare. Ordinary but packed with extraordinarily observed characters; and extraordinary enough for Danny to fall in love twice (and think about sex a few more times than that). Ordinary but when someone calls out "Be careful" in parting no one takes it lightly and for good reason. First published in the UK in 1999 and reissued by Blackstaff in 2008 The International is a timeless novel: funny bawdy deftly crafted and heartwrenchingly humane. Featuring an essay "On Reading The International " by Man Booker-Prize winner Anne Enright From the Trade Paperback edition. |

The Price Of A Bargain: The Quest For Cheap And The Death Of Globalization $10.39 A brilliant investigation into the true cost of our bargain economy and the end of consumerism as we know it Ours is the age of discount: we want more, cheaper, better. But the result is low wages, urban blight, environmental damage, labour abuses, a cookie-cutter model of progress, and now an international economic crisis. With an eye for documentary storytelling and investigative detail, Gordon Laird traces the bargain from its humble dollar-store origins to its place as global juggernaut. From Alberta’s tar sands to China’s factories, from Las Vegas to the Arctic Circle, a single question emerges: how will we survive the bargain? From the Hardcover edition. |

Skype Hacks: Tips & Tools for Cheap, Fun, Innovative Phone Service $4.36 If you’ve heard about Skype–and who hasn’t with all the recent media attention devoted to internet telephone services–chances are you’ve been mighty tempted to try it out. "Skype Hacks" tells you what all the Skype hype is about, explains the basics, and shows you more than 100 clever tips and tricks for tweaking and tuning Skype to make it do just what you want and more. Millions of people (48 million and counting, in fact) have opted for Skype, which uses peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to turn any PC, Mac, or Pocket PC into a telephone. Skype offers free calls between computers and extremely cheap calls to "old-fashioned" phone numbers (landlines and mobile phones). The sound quality is excellent, and end-to-end encryption means the connection is private and secure. But if you really know what you’re doing, Skype can accomplish a whole lot more than that. Software developer and author Andrew Sheppard recently converted his entire house to Skype and uses it for all his personal and business calls, even when he’s traveling. In "Skype Hacks," he shows you how to do things with the technology that even the engineers at Skype probably never intended. "Skype Hacks" shows you how to: Get started with Skype Figure out how much money you’re saving and maximize your savings Cut the ties to your old phone company Optimize your Skype configuration Integrate Skype with desktop tools like Microsoft Office and your web browser Set up a Skype-based call center The book offers ideas for creating and organizing a contacts list, using Skype to transfer files, taking advantage of chat and voicemail capabilities, turning a PDA into a mobile phone, andautomating Skype for even greater efficiency. So whether you’d simply like to give Skype a trial run, you want new Skype ring tones and fun on-hold music, or you’re considering wiring your home with Skype to get rid of "regular" phone service altogether, "Skype Hacks" is your ideal guide. |

New U.S. Foreign Policy — Cheap Oil, Universal Test Ban, Middle East Free Trade Area $23.93 A new U.S. foreign policy based on cheap oil will boom economy, win iraq war, block Iran bomb, defund terror, deflate petrocrats and break OPEC. A universal test ban will block Iran nuclear missiles. A Middle East Free Trade Area (MEFTA) will bring business peace to Israel and Palestine. Cheap oil will result from maximizing crude oil production of the Eastern (oil) Province of Saudi Arabia by the Riyadh government to glut the market. If Saudi greed blocks cheap oil, then by a new Shia state which replaces the Eastern Province brought about by the CIA in return for long-term cheap oil and bases. A universal test ban will outlaw all tests anywhere by anyone, including nonsignatories like Iran. The ban would block Teheran from necessary tests to perfect a nuclear warhead for its missiles. An international Middle East Free Trade Area in Gaza will generate full employment, and thus Palestinians would prevent terrorism which would result in the loss of jobs. |
